Thousands remain without power after severe storm

Bill Williams is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media tens of thousands of customers were left without electricity after a powerful storm moved through Greene and Columbia counties October 7. In an email to customers early Thursday, Central Hudson Gas and Electric reported its line crews "have made significant progress in restoring power to homes and businesses... The storms impacted more than 26,000 customers. As of 8 a.m. October 8, approximately 9,450 customers were still without power, the majority of them located in Greene, Ulster and Albany counties." The outages in Greene County included the location of the WGXC tower, suspending FM transmission late Wednesday afternoon. Central Hudson said power would be restored to "the vast majority" of its customers on Thursday. National Grid listed more than 3,200 customers without power at mid-day Thursday. The hardest hit areas were in Greenport, Stuyvesant, Niverville and North Chatham. National Grid estimates that power will be fully restored by 3 p.m. October 8. New York State Electric and Gas reported more than 4,000 customers were without power. The hardest hit areas were in Chatham, Copake and Ghent. NYSEG has not provided any restoration times. Eduardo Medina is reporting in the Times Union in the Capital Region, the areas experiencing the most outages as of Thursday, were Rensselaer, Schenectady and Albany counties. Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple said 57,000 people in his county are still still in the dark, adding that 400 National Grid crews were coming in to help with the restoration effort. A National Grid spokesperson said the mid-week storm was the worst the company has seen hit the region since Tropical Storm Irene in 2011.
