Hunter officials announce Kaaterskill Clove plan

Jul 30, 2020 5:30 am
Sarah Trafton is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media after hearing multiple complaints from residents, as well as potential solutions to the overuse of Kaaterskill Clove during a public meeting last week, the Hunter Town Board announced its mitigation plan for the popular spot July 28. The town has decided to invest in electronic ticketing software to link parking violations with a violator’s registration, town board member Sean Mahoney said. An impound lot will be set up at town hall, and will be in use starting the weekend of August 8. “We will have a Town of Hunter police officer there releasing vehicles once they pay the fees associated with it,” he said. Mahoney said, “We are doing this in the interest of health and safety. We had a number of first responders that spoke up at our public hearing and said they are highly concerned about their ability on high-use days of getting rescue vehicles through the Clove. Traffic is at a standstill when emergency vehicles need to be able to get through.” Town officials met with the state Department of Environmental Conservation July 29, Mahoney said. He said the town is continuing to collaborate and coordinate with the DEC. The department is currently increasing trash clean ups and are looking at testing the water, but nothing definitive has been decided as yet, he said. Mahoney also said the state Department of Transportation is looking at signage in the Clove, including the potential for signs that would refer people to North/South Lake. “This is the highest priority to the town right now, to deal with these issues,” Mahoney said. “The public meeting we had was extremely informative. ...[I]t’s clear our town demands that action is taken.” Read the full story at HudsonValley360 [dot] com.
