Nation nears 100,000 deaths, state close to 30,000 dead from COVID-19

As the nation's death toll from COVID-19 approaches 100,000 this weekend, the state of New York has 29,141 deaths according to Johns Hopkins University & Medicine’s online COVID-19 tracker. Locally, Columbia County reported 11 more cases of COVID-19 on May 24, and “The Grand at Barnwell has experienced another death since Saturday, bringing to 15 the number of deaths from COVID-19 at the facility,” Columbia County Department of Health Director Jack Mabb said May 24 of the Valatie nursing home. Greene County announced another six more coronavirus cases May 24, up to 269 total. The Mid-Hudson region should begin reopening nonessential businesses May 26 under the state's phase one program, with construction, manufacturing, forestry, fishing, pickup retail, and wholesale trades set to restart.
