State suspends major road, bridge construction for holiday

Jul 04, 2019 1:00 pm
Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has announced that lane closures for road and bridge construction projects on state highways will be suspended beginning at 6 a.m., July 4, and continue until 6 a.m., July 8 to accommodate travelers during the busy Independence Day holiday weekend. Some work may continue behind permanent concrete barriers or for emergency repairs, according to the governor's press release. Cuomo, in conjunction with state and local law enforcement agencies, announced last week they will increase patrols to crack down on drunk and drugged driving and other traffic infractions during the holiday. According to AAA, nearly 49 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more away from home for the Independence Day holiday this weekend, an increase of more than 4.1 percent compared to last year.
