State warns consumers to stay away from Shunpike Dairy raw milk
Jan 31, 2019 2:15 pm
The Daily Freeman is reporting the state Department of Agriculture and Markets is warning the public to not consume unpasteurized raw milk from Shunpike Dairy in Millbrook, Dutchess County, after a milk sample from the dairy was found to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The bacteria was discovered in a sample of milk collected by a state inspector. The dairy is prohibited from selling raw milk until further sampling indicates the product is free of the harmful bacteria. Currently, no cases of listeriosis associated with the milk have been reported. The department asks that anyone who purchased raw milk from Shunpike Dairy immediately dispose of the milk and call (845) 702-6224. Listeriosis can be a serious and sometimes fatal infection in young children, cancer patients, elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems, and can cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women. Otherwise healthy people might suffer only short-term, flu-like symptoms from the illness, such as a high fever, severe headaches, abdominal pain, and more. Read the full story in the Daily Freeman.
