DREAM Act fails in New York State Senate

Glenn Blain reports in The New York Daily News that the New York State Senate defeated the DREAM Act by two votes March 17. The bill would enable the children of undocumented immigrants to receive state tuition assistance, and was approved by the Assembly earlier this year. Thirty Democrats voted for the bill, with two against: Ted O’Brien of Rochester and Simcha Felder of Brooklyn. All Republicans voted against the measure, which needed 32 votes to pass. Locally, Cecilia Tkaczyk, a Democrat who represents parts of Greene, Albany, Ulster, and Schoharie counties, voted for the bill, and Kathy Marchione, the Republican who represents Columbia and Rennselear counties, voted against.
