House to vote on tax plan Tuesday

Dec 16, 2017 12:31 am
Brian Faler, Seung Min Kim, and Colin Wilhelm report for Politico that Republicans will vote in the House of Representatives on Dec. 19 on their tax plan. The proposal would cut taxes for the richest Americans while raising taxes on the poor. The state and local tax deduction is capped at $10,000 for property taxes plus either sales or income taxes in the bill. The Affordable Care Act’s mandate to have health insurance would end with the bill's passage. Congress did not hold normal hearings on the bill, and is voting on it before the Congressional Budget Office can run the numbers on how much the plan would increase the country's deficit. Local representative John Faso said last week that he will vote against the tax bill, even though he voted for it Dec. 4, in a procedural vote to move it to a conference committee. In November he voted against the bill. Faso has yet to comment on this version of the tax bill besides tweeting, "Happy that the repeal of the Johnson Amendment was removed from tax bill; pulpit endorsements of candidates isn’t why most people go to religious services." If the tax plan passes the house, it would then have to pass the Senate, where health issues with Senators John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) might complicate the vote. The Senate is not allowing new Alabama Senator Doug Jones, a Democrat, to vote on the bill, even though he was elected Dec. 12. Read the full story in Politico.
