Legislature committee votes in favor of NYS styrofoam ban
Jun 06, 2019 3:00 pm
The Greene County Legislature Public Safety Committee June 5, approved a resolution urging New York to implement a statewide ban on the use of polystyrene foam food containers. The measure was brought forward by the committee chair, Cairo representative, Republican Bill Lawrence. The resolution argues that the ban is necessary because polystyrene foam is a common environmental pollutant. The Environmental Protection Agency has determined the foam manufacturing process is the fifth largest creator of hazardous waste nationwide. There is evidence that suggests polystyrene foam is a carcinogen and neurotoxin as well, according to the resolution. The measure now goes to the full Legislature for review.
