Carl Campanile and Bernadette Hogan report in the New York Post that covid-19, a new strain of coronavirus, has been found in New York State. “The patient, a woman in her late thirties, contracted the virus while traveling abroad in Iran, and is currently isolated in her [New York City] home,” Cuomo said in the statement on March 1. New York's single case is one of 76 confirmed cases in the United States, while there have been thousands of cases in China, South Korea, Iran, and Italy. On Feb. 29 Cuomo announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is now allowing New York state to use its own tests for coronavirus. Wadsworth Lab in Albany will begin the testing immediately. Local schools are also starting to make plans for covid-19 to enter the Hudson Valley. "The local health department will contact our school district if a suspected or known COVID-I9 case emerges in our community. Our district is prepared to work with any affected families," Hudson schools superintendent Maria Suttmeier said in a Feb. 28 letter to parents. Read more about this story in the New York Post.
