Did you know that the Hawai'i used to be self-sufficient in terms of food production? Today, the islands import the majority of their food and Hawai'i has been termed ground zero for experimental pesticide testing. In this broadcast, Food Sleuth Radio host and registered dietitian, Melinda Hemmelgarn, interviews Hector Valenzuela, Ph.D., crop production specialist at the University of Hawaii – Manoa. Valenzuala's agro-ecological research was thwarted, and his voice silenced after he questioned the use of biotechnology and chemical inputs. Valenzuela describes the GMO push at his Land Grant University, financial interests, and threats to sustainable, indigenous farming, public health and free speech.

Dietitian Melinda Hemmelgarn helps listeners "think beyond their plates," connect the dots between food, health and agriculture, and find food truth. Produced by Dan Hemmelgarn.
