Music from around the world is featured. Bringing the audience into the realm of other cultures through music, hopefully expanding empathy for the “other,” and recognizing that “other” in ourselves. From WGDR, Goddard College Plainfield, VT. wgdr.org/. The North Indian Raga Malkauns (known as Hindolam in the South Indian tradition) is a serious meditative Raga and also one of the oldest in the Indian Classical music tradition. Today we hear three versions of it all performed live. Opening with a vocal Jugalbandi (duet) featuring Pandit Bhimsen Joshi (North India) performing with Dr. Balamurali Krishna (South India). That is followed with a performance by the Pakistani Sarod master, Asad Qizilbash, and we end with Raga Malkauns played on the oboe-like Shennai by the great master of that instrument: Bismillah Khan.
