The North Indian Raga Malkauns (known as Hindolam in the South Indian tradition) is a serious meditative Raga and also one of the oldest in the Indian Classical music tradition. Today we hear three versions of it all performed live. Opening with a vocal Jugalbandi (duet) featuring Pandit Bhimsen Joshi (North India) performing with Dr. Balamurali Krishna (South India).That is followed with a performance by the Pakistani Sarod master, Asad Qizilbash, and we end with Raga Malkauns played on the oboe-like Shennai by the great master of that instrument: Bismillah Khan.
