This Radio Everywhere! pledge drive edition of Overlooked focuses on jazz record labels, their role in the development of the music and how each had its own sound, graphic style and personality. This is the second time host Rob Saffer and guest archivist Marc Epstein have explored jazz labels (the first edition, archived here, was June 22, 2017), highlighting recordings that best exemplify each label’s sound, look and feel. We’ll listen to new music and old, recordings from major labels such as Impulse!, Riverside and Verve, and more obscure labels such as Soul Note, Fontana and Strata East. Artists include Mary Lou Williams, Max Roach, Cecil Taylor, Thelonious Monk, Eric Dolphy, Archie Shepp and many more.
