Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. In that vein, on slate for your delectation tonight is my "2001" show from, yes, 2001--augmented with the voice of Arthur C.Clarke himself reading from his book, "2001: A Space Odyssey," where he actually explains in concrete words all the trippy light-show parts you remember from the film. You'll drift through an ethereal mix of a veritable shitload of versions of "Also Sprach Zarathustra," ending with a Tater-pleasin' bluegrass trip called "The Arkansas Time Traveler" by the Star Spangled Washboard Band--whom, it turns out, became Blotto, the band who did the superb send-up of the lounge-lizard genre "The NowTones," which opens the "Monsters of the Lounge" episode of BSTF. As the SSWB, they weave an absolutely apeshit medley of "ASZ," "Time Won't Let Me" by the Outsiders, "Time" by the Chambers Brothers, and "Time Out"--and man, was Brubeck ever made for the electric mandolin! From WREK in Atlanta.
