Music from around the world is featured. Bringing the audience into the realm of other cultures through music, hopefully expanding empathy for the “other,” and recognizing that “other” in ourselves. From WGDR, Goddard College Plainfield, VT. wgdr.org/. This show draws on two albums: The first by the Kurdish musician Rusan Filiztek who explores and synthesizes the music that existed during the period of the Ottoman Empire which lasted 600 years and that was common to the Nation States (Syria, Armenia, Turkey, Iran, Iraq etc) that replaced it. Then on to Kurdistan which is one cultural group that never achieved Nation Statehood and which to this day straddles parts of Syria, Iran, Iraq and Turkey. Today we explore the correspondences between the historic music absorbed by Rusan Filiztek and the current Kurdish music of the group Nishtiman.
