Hudson Ward Supervisor, Linda Mussmann is the quintessential Renaissance person. She is perhaps equally well-known for her role as co-director of Time & Space Ltd in Hudson, NY, along with her partner of 49 years and lead performer, Claudia Bruce. Born in Gary, Indiana to a third-generation German farming family, Mussmann studied theater at Purdue University and in Chicago. She moved to New York City in 1973, where she wrote, directed and produced numerous performance pieces informed by her deep understanding of history and literature and perhaps inspired by her love of Virginia Woolf, Gertrude Stein and Oscar Wilde.
Linda Mussmann has been described as an artist “in the style of Gertrude Stein,” but this designation, albeit accurate, is too limiting. Although she rejects traditional narrative and dramatic structure to address issues of meaning, perception and intention, she has also created conceptual sculptures, one involving dictionaries, encyclopedias and weather. And she is currently exhibiting monumental scale canvases which contain painted words and snippets of phrases in block letters. From 1976 forward, these works were performed and interpreted by Claudia Bruce, Mussmann’s muse and collaborator. Many have been shown at prestigious venues and colleges in New York. In 1991, the two women moved from New York to Hudson, NY, helping to create community and foster creativity in a decaying upstate industrial city by their mere presence.
Tune in to WGXC 90.7 FM and online www.wgxc.org this Sunday, January 26, 2025 between 4 and 6 PM to hear this fascinating artist talking about her new paintings, her process as an artist, her love of community and her beloved muse in her own words.
