Overlooked: More Newly Released Music

Overlooked: More Newly Released Music. Portrait of Arnold Schoenberg, by Egon Schiele, 1917. (Sep 24, 2024)

Hosted by Rob Saffer.

After a string of thematic shows focused on The Wildflowers Sessions, jazz musicians who died too young, and music that’s relentless and ecstatic, “Overlooked” host Rob Saffer is dedicating the month of September to airing programs focused on newly released music. The playlist will be typically wide-ranging, swinging from conventional and experimental jazz to classic prog rock and centuries-old Bhutanese vocal music. All tracks are brand new except for a couple that are reissues. The program will begin with a short movement from “Verklarte Nacht,” a pivotal composition by Arnold Schoenberg who would have turned 150 on September 13.

After the local news at noon, “Overlooked” is a show focusing on overlooked and under-heard jazz, improvisational, and other fringe music, from early roots to contemporary experiments, a mix of familiar to rare, classic to weird. The show is broadcast live from Overlook Mountain in Ulster County.

Host Rob Saffer is the former Executive Director and Producer of the Creative Music Foundation. While living in Brooklyn for 25 years, he served on advisory boards for Celebrate Brooklyn and Symphony Space. He also curated the Brooklyn Museum’s summer jazz series and helped found The Mingus Big Band with Mingus's widow, Sue.
