Abby Hoover is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media the Greenport Town Board heard from Town Assessor Kim Smith February 5, about the ongoing townwide reassessment project. The re-evaluation began May 29, 2019 and will continue through May 30, 2020. During the process, the Assessor’s Office will review each property and assign updated values. Notices will be sent out to property owners in late February, so they can then review the assessment before the tentative roll is filed. The last assessment was done in 2015, but Smith said it was not as in-depth as the one currently underway. “There are going to be some shifts this time,” Smith said. She said her office is working in cooperation with Columbia County Real Property Director Suzette Booy on the project. As a result, the town has saved thousands of dollars, Smith said. Booy said it is not a perfect system, and the county has learned a lot in the process of following Real Property Tax Law. The goal is to be able to evaluate everyone in the same manner. The town of Greenport Grievance Day is held on the Thursday following the last Tuesday in May. Read the full story at HudsonValley360 [dot] com.
