William J. Kemble reports in The Daily Freeman that the Saugerties Council of Churches holds a 1.2-mile CROP Hunger Walk on Oct. 14 to ensure, "that more people worldwide have access to nutritious, sustainable food sources.” The Village Board approved the march Sept. 5, with it starting at 2 p.m. at the Saugerties Reformed Church on Main Street. “Last year we had about 50 people that participated,” council representative Margaret Todd told the board. “We’re expecting this year to have a few more because people are going to come down from Woodstock.” Sixteen organizations in the Saugerties Council of Churches and four Woodtsock churches are expected to participate. CROP Hunger Walks first were held in 1947. The website of Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty says the walks “have ensured that more people worldwide have access to nutritious, sustainable food sources.” “From combating droughts in Nicaragua to providing agricultural training in Indonesia to stocking shelves in hundreds of food pantries across the United States, CROP Hunger Walks help end hunger by raising funds to support local food programs and ... international anti-hunger work.”
