National organization recommended against Reiter appointment

MidHudsonNews is reporting the national Association of Local Government Auditors recommended against the appointment of a former acting Ulster County executive as the county comptroller. Adele Reiter was confirmed by the Ulster County Legislature in a split vote, June 11, to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Elliott Auerbach. Some Democrats favored Rief Kanan, who works at the SUNY New Paltz Benjamin Center. In a June 7 letter to Legislature Chairwoman Tracey Bartels and other lawmakers, Douglas Jones, the city auditor for Kansas City, Missouri, recommended against the appointment. “Government Auditing Standards, promulgated by the Comptroller General of the United States, discourages appointing senior management staff to auditing positions where they could audit work or functions they recently oversaw or where responsible for as managers,” Jones wrote.
