At Belleayre it is 'business as usual,' but lodge remains closed

Dec 29, 2020 5:45 am

Ariél Zangla is reporting for the Daily Freeman Belleayre Mountain Ski Center management is saying it will be a few weeks before the damage caused by a snowslide to the Overlook Lodge is repaired. "Right now they do plan on repairing and getting the lodge in shipshape condition to open up in a few weeks," Joe McCracken, the resort's marketing manager, said Mon., Dec. 28. McCracken said he did not know how long it would take to repair the lodge, which is located in the mid-mountain range. The avalanche occurred at 5:40 a.m. on Christmas Day and caused serious damage to the lodge, which remains closed. The resort itself was also closed on Christmas Day due to safety concerns but operations resumed Saturday. Heavy rain and snowmelt late December 24 and early on the 25th flooded creeks and adjacent roads throughout the region and melted snow that was already on the ground from the December 17 nor'easter. McCracken said quite a few doors and windows at the Overlook Lodge were broken by the sliding snow and a wall was taken out from a wing going into the main room. He said the time it takes to reopen the lodge would depend on the repairs and the insurance company. In the meantime, Belleayre will use its other base lodge at the bottom of the mountain, McCracken said. It is "business as usual" and the resort is making as much snow as the weather will allow, he said. Read the full story in the Daily Freeman.
