Cosmic Cinemas closes; theater to reopen in December under new management

Michael Williams is reporting for the Times Union Cosmic Cinemas, the fledgling cinema-eatery in Greenport, shut its doors last week. As of Fri., Nov. 22, the Fairview Avenue theater was closed, its lights were off and signs taped to the doors and windows said, "There will be no showings today. We apologize for the inconvenience." The theater is expected to reopen, however, under the same management that took over the historic Madison Avenue theater in Albany. "We're shooting to get it back open in December," said Kris Keisling, the cinema's general manager. The South Carolina-based Cosmic Cinemas opened the theater last November, after months of renovation. Cosmic had branded itself as a haven for cinephiles who wanted to watch movies without distractions, promising to ban cell-phone use, talking and toddlers, and where moviegoers could order a meal during a screening.
