Health department says overdoses up in Greene Co.

Sarah Trafton is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media the number of opioid-related overdoses in Greene County is up, according to an alert issued by the Greene County Public Health Department. The county health department is advising anyone in active addiction, "If you must use, use safely or seek help for your addiction; have access to Narcan and know how to use it; let a friend or loved one know where you are, never use alone.” Four people suffered overdoses last week, Greener Pathways Program Director Carl Quinn said. All of the patients were revived with Narcan. Three of the four cases involved heroin; three of the incidents happened in Catskill; the fourth was in Cairo. In Greene and Columbia counties in 2017, 90 opioid- and heroin-related deaths were reported, as well as 967 opioid- and heroin-related hospitalizations. In July 2019, 30 suspected overdoses were reported to date in Greene County; in Columbia County there were 16. Data on the second half of 2019 were not yet available. The Greener Pathways’ mobile clinic will be at Columbia-Greene Community College from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on February 20. On Mon., Feb. 24, the mobile clinic will be at the Hannaford market in Cairo from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. In addition to Narcan kits, the clinic also offers medication-assisted treatment and other support.
