Mon., Jan. 18, is Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the Daily Freeman has a rundown of how local services and offices will be affected:
Amtrak will operate on its weekend/holiday schedule
Banks are closed
County offices are closed
Federal offices are closed
Financial markets are closed
No service from Greene County Transit
Metro-North will operate on its weekend/holiday schedule
No mail pickup or delivery
Schools and colleges are closed
State offices are closed
Trailways will operate on its regular schedule with some cancellations

Events in the region:

In Rensselaer, Andrea Smyth and Denise Murphy will present an hour-long virtual event featuring two inspiring women and showcase the strength, skill and loyalty of black women. The event will be held from noon to 1 p.m., Mon., Jan. 18. Speakers are Gwen Wright, potential candidate for Rensselaer County Executive, and Ojawanna Wilson, College of Saint Rose graduate and design artist for Biden/Harris and Warnock campaigns in Georgia. The Schenectady County Human Rights Commission will host its annual Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. observance virtually at 2 p.m. Sun., Jan. 17. This event is open to the public, and will stream live through the county’s YouTube channel. The theme is Civil Rights Then and Now, with a presentation by Dr. Janet Dewart Bell, author of Lighting the Fires of Freedom: African American Women in the Civil Rights Movement, a 2019 nominee for the NAACP Image Award. Master of Ceremonies is retired CBS 6 News Capital Bureau Chief Ken Screven.

The Hudson Interfaith Council invites the public to share its 2021 commemoration of the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Sun., Jan. 17, beginning at 6 p.m., via Zoom. The Micah 6:8 Award will be presented to a graduating high school senior, a deserving neighbor will be honored with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Public Servant Award. Plus cameo appearances by elected and community leaders, inspirational video clips, and a message from Pastor Richard Turpin, the President of the Hudson-Chatham-Catskill-Kingston Fellowship of African American Churches. Guests can register at eventbrite [dot] com.
