Amanda Fries is reporting for the Times Union on August 27, labor unions representing teachers in New York called on the state health department to require the wearing of face masks indoors throughout the school day. The New York State United Teachers, as well as the American Federation of Teachers along with local educators and others sent a letter to health Commissioner Howard Zucker citing ongoing concerns with schools’ reopening plans and mask policies in some school districts. “In reviewing individual reopening plans with educators in the field, it’s clear that numerous plans do not go far enough in their mask mandates to ensure the safety of students and educators,” the letter stated. NYSUT has called for school reopening plans to focus on the health and safety of staff and students, and for school districts to begin the school year with remote learning if reopening plans cause health officials concern. The teachers’ union is also advocating for a statewide policy to close school buildings for 14 days if there is a COVID-19 case. The union is also are calling for school districts to provide clear protocols on testing, contact tracing and quarantining. Read the full story in the Times Union.
