Athens fire causes major service outage

An early morning structure fire in Athens caused a major service outage for Mid-Hudson Cablevision customers in Columbia County, Wed., Feb. 22. Cable, Internet and phone service was interrupted after 6:30 a.m., and fully restored by mid-afternoon, according to a statement released by the company, and other government announcements. Claude Haton is reporting in The Daily Mail that Slice of Athens, a pizza show on Washington Ave. in the village, was gutted. The remains of the structure were later leveled by the Department of Public Works. Owner Donna Passaretti said she was told the fire was caused by an electrical short in a freezer unit.
