State puts school funding decision on hold until after November election

Sep 17, 2020 1:00 pm
WNYT [dot] com is reporting K-12 schools statewide have been working with a budget shortfall caused by the economic fallout from the pandemic. State budget director Robert Mujica said the final decisions on whether the state will slash 20 percent in school funding will not be made until after the November election. The threat of funding cuts has been a huge issue for districts as they finalized their reopening plans before the start of school. Some have already let go of dozens of employees because of it. In one example, the Schenectady School District not only let employees go, it has also condensed schools. Mujica said he feels those decisions were premature. He says the state has withheld $300 million in education funding so far, and will not be withholding the school aid that is due at the end of this month. Read more at WNYT [dot] com.
