Ulster County State Senator wants farmers involved in legalized marijuana

Paul Kirby reports in the Daily Freeman that many issues are delaying a vote in the legislature on legalizing marijuana use in New York. Ulster County State Senator Jen Metzger, a Democrat from Rosendale, said, “I want to make sure that whatever legislation passes in a way that benefits our small farmers, that benefits our family farms and ... the cultivation of it (marijuana) does not become a commodity of industrial agriculture,” Metzger said. “They (small farms) should be able to have the opportunity to take advantage of those markets, of cultivating it,” she said. So far, most proposals being discussed in Albany do not allow for any personal or small-scale, marijuana farming, only large-scale corporate operations. The legislative session ends June 19.
