Federal judge orders Cuomo to include ASL interpretation of briefings

Sam Hesler is reporting for WNYT-TV Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has been ordered by a federal judge to include an in-frame sign-language interpretation during his daily coronavirus briefings. Cuomo was sued last week by Disability Rights New York and four other deaf individuals for not providing, “simultaneous American Sign Language interpretation for television broadcast for deaf audience members.” Two of the plaintiffs are from the Capital Region. According to the lawsuit, there are at least 208,0000 people who are deaf or hard of hearing in New York City alone. In a brief injunction filed May 11, Judge Valerie Caproni said, “[The] defendant is directed to immediately implement in-frame ASL interpretation during his daily press briefings.” Read the full story at wnyt [dot] com.
