Barbara Ess was at the forefront of the 1980s’ postmodern movement that pulled apart both the conceptual and visual underpinnings of what was expected of photography. Using pinhole cameras, low-end spy cameras and other low-tech vision “enhancers,” Ess produced blurry, monochromatic images that test one’s trust in both the photograph as a believable document and vision itself.
