At the Feb. 28 Cairo-Durham school district Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Mary Fassett announced plans to conduct a public forum to address community questions and concerns about the grade realignment plan (also known as the Princeton Plan). Instead of closing one of too many schools, the district is shifting half the Cairo students to Durham, and half the Durham students to Cairo. The meeting will take place 7 p.m., Thurs., March 7, at the Cairo-Durham Middle/High School to discuss this plan. At that meeting, Fassett said, the public will be presented with additional material, laying out the rationale behind the district’s decision. Board President Greg Koerner-Fox polled board members on whether they will reconsider their prior vote regarding the K-2 and 3-5 grade division keeping the Durham Elementary school open in the 2013-14 school year. The response was a unanimous “no.” In a public comment period the Board was asked if it would consider implementing the grade realignment plan in the two floors of the Cairo Elementary building as a cost-saving measure. Fassett said more information on the specifics of the forum would be released Fri., Mar. 1.
