(USA, 2009, 82 min.) First film by director by Damien Chazelle (whose second, Whiplash, has been receiving high praise from audiences & critics) recasts the MGM musical tradition in a gritty, vérité style. The film features a unique mixture of live jazz performances and choreographed tap dancing, as well as several more traditional musical numbers. The Boston Globe called it “the most buzzed-about movie at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival.” The NY Times wrote: “Visually distinctive & aurally delightful, ‘Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench’ has style to burn. A soulful black-and-white commentary on love, art & their competing demands, this Boston-based musical from Damien Chazelle floats on a wave of spontaneity & charm.”
