Brought to you by members of The Old Tone Festival team comes a new daylong musical odyssey on Sept. 30. What's that sound?? That tone that hangs over high wide mountain tops, sinking down into narrow hollers, and wading through damp winding bayous? That ringing that stumbles into the hooch-houses of Storyville and wafts around the smokey tables of Chez Florence? That melody that drifts over the breezy islands of the Pacific and Caribbean and roars in the swirling swollen ocean itself? - A grainy, warm, spirited Voodoo vibrato that pulses with soul and sass through decade after decade of music from the Americas and their surrounding ports of call. We might call it Global Americana.
Come celebrate this wide net of human expression at THE DOWN COUNTY JUMP music festival on Sept 30 at the Race Brook Lodge.
Noon-11pm. Nine bands. Eleven straight hours of spirited transformative performances from some of the most dedicated roots musicians anywhere.
Olde Time Breakdowns from MOONSHINE HOLLER
Sea Shanties and Street Ballads from SHINBONE ALLEY
Golden Radio Country Blues from FATBOY WILSON and OLD VIEJO BONES (SAMOA WILSON and ERNESTO GOMEZ)
Gypsy Waltzes and Swing from the LUCKY5
Hawaiian Hapa Haole from SLOWEY AND THE BOATS
Jamaican Rock Steady from THE HAUGHTIES
Swamp-Pop Two-Steps from the Cajun allstars, ROSE AND THE BROS
Voodoo Kompa and Haitian Chants from TJOVI GINEN
Post-war New Orleans R&B from THE JACKSON LYNCH BAND
THE JUMP will offer some of the most danceable shuffles this side of the Civil War.
Hosted in the towering music barn at the bucolic mountainside retreat of the Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield, Massachusetts - ticket holders will receive a discount on rooms.
Kids under 12 free - and a kids club performance space will feature Roger the Jester, a frog costume contest, a singalong and more.
Delicious food, hiking, campfire jam sessions will be available on the sprawling grounds throughout the weekend.

Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement’s #Never21 hashtag, French-Malian choreographer and dancer Smaïl Kanouté’s deeply resonant piece—making its U.S. premiere—pays tribute to young people of color who have lost their lives to gun violence all over the world before reaching the age of 21. The performance, separated into three segments, focuses on the senseless deaths of young Black youth in New York, Johannesburg, and Rio de Janeiro.
Excerpts of powerful testimonies from victims’ family members are transcribed on the dancers’ bodies, combining dance and visual art. The dancers’ intense movement draws on contemporary and intuitive dance, krump, popping, and baile funk in recounting the stories of many broken lives.
Choreographed by Smaïl Kanouté
Performed by Smaïl Kanouté, Aston Bonaparte, and Salomon Mpondo-Dicka

Mythic storytelling: Barbara Newman in conversation with Jana Laiz. In mythic storytelling, we draw upon the rich tapestry of ancient myths, legends, and archetypes to weave together tales that resonate with the deepest recesses of human emotion and experience . We build worlds, by constructing a living breathing universe in which these stories unfold. These worlds possess their own history, cultures, and belief systems, By harmoniously blending these elements, storytellers captivate their readers and create enduring narratives that leave an indelible mark on the collective imagination. We will read from our own work, along with passages from authors like Ursula LeGuin and Madeline Miller.
