Karen Werner is a radio artist and sociologist. Her audio pieces have been broadcast on community and public radio stations across Europe, North America, Australia and Israel and have been part of numerous live events and art exhibitions. In 2017-2018, Werner created a series of public sound installations at Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier, including “Covenant of the Tongue” and “Zirkus,” which are sonic autoethnographies about Holocaust postmemory in Vienna. Her recent work is in live performance: sound installation meets documentary storytelling meets narrowcast radio transmission. Werner was a 2019 invited artist at the Kone Foundation’s Saari Residence in Finland and a 2017-2018 Fellow of the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture. She received a Tending Space Fellowship from the Hemera Foundation from 2014-2016 for artists with a Buddhist practice. Werner produces the creative radio sonic zine Sketchpad, broadcast weekly on WMCB 107.9lpfm in Greenfield, Massachusetts, and she teaches workshops on radio art, radio autoethnography and politics of storytelling. Hudson Underground presents a solo exhibition of new works by New York artist and sand painter, Joe Mangrum. The exhibit includes exciting original permanent sand paintings, utilizing Mangrum’s signature technique of binding colored sand on canvas and carved-relief wood panels, as well as a selection of acrylic and oil paintings based on photographic documentation of sand paintings, forming a feedback loop of visual imagery. José Maceda’s Ugnayan was an expansive audience participatory work for radio to be broadcast at 6 p.m. on New Year’s Day, 1974. Arguably the most ambitious, provocative, and controversial work in his repertoire, the fifty-one-minute-long piece consisted of twenty separate tracks, each to be played on a different public radio frequency simultaneously, producing a musical atmosphere at the scale of the city. All thirty-seven radio stations in the metropolitan Manila area turned over their channel for Maceda’s sound diffusion, with some tracks playing from multiple stations. Millions of listeners tuned in. Manila’s parks, plazas, and street corners were converted into what the composer called “Ugnayan Centers”—142 locations in all. In one of the biggest, 15,000 people congregated, their personal radios creating a stunningly knotted mass of sounds.

Aki Onda will restage this piece at the front of the gallery space from 2 - 5 p.m. and before performances daily during the New Ear Festival at Fridman Gallery, 169 Bowery NYC, January 6 - 12, 2020. In addition to the 20 transmitters and 20 radios installed at the gallery, visitors are encouraged to bring their own FM transistor radios and contribute to the installation by tuning into one of the transmitting frequencies.

Aki Onda will restage this piece at the front of the gallery space from 2 - 5 p.m. and before performances daily during the New Ear Festival at Fridman Gallery, 169 Bowery NYC, January 6 - 12, 2020. In addition to the 20 transmitters and 20 radios installed at the gallery, visitors are encouraged to bring their own FM transistor radios and contribute to the installation by tuning into one of the transmitting frequencies.

The exhibit includes exciting original permanent sand paintings, utilizing Mangrum’s signature technique of binding colored sand on canvas and carved-relief wood panels, as well as a selection of acrylic and oil paintings based on photographic documentation of sand paintings, forming a feedback loop of visual imagery. Rescheduled from Jan. 18, Bobby Previte debuts "Music from the Dune Shacks" with Keith Prayon alto and baritone saxophones; Marcus DeGrazia on alto and baritone saxophones; Michael Kammers playing the Moog synthesizer; and Previte on trap drums. The Hudson Area Library’s General Reading Book Group will meet to discuss "Before We Were Yours" by Lisa Wingate. This monthly group meets on Wednesdays, 5-6 p.m., covers fiction and nonfiction, and is facilitated by long-time member of the Friends of the Hudson Area Library, Sharon Getty. The Tower of Babel is a Biblical myth about turning one voice, or one language, into many. That's what WGXC's radio tower does. WGXC recently renewed its tower lease to continue FM transmissions on 90.7-FM. We need your help to keep that tower transmitting the many voices of the upper Hudson Valley.
