Hi Brasil. This phantom island that lived on maps for centuries but nowhere else. Cartographers swore it was real, marking it so carefully into the Atlantic like it had solid ground. But anyone who actually sailed out looking for it just found empty water. Was it ever real? Sunken? A shared fever dream? The mystery outlived the island itself. The island is the mystery. Mystery is a place? I got obsessed with Hi Brasil because I feel like a native to that escapist nowhere.

On a different breath: everyone says I look exactly like my mom, even though I'm the textbook Persian looking woman. I grew up eating sopa paraguaia and muhammara. I am a contradiction that makes sense only in a border. My body is a phantom island.

So when I was listening to Jason Mohaghegh's Collector of Turns this week (second part, occult poetry that sits heavy), I started connecting it to my grandmother's prayers. Guaraní prayers that died with her. Nobody remembers them whole, just pieces. "The encantados language." The spirits' tongue. And I wondered: what does it sound like to be in the mystery border? To be a border body. Native to a land that is itself a mystery. What would that sound like sonically? That's what we're exploring this week. The phantom islands inside and outside us like hot and cold breath.
