"Che & Allen," an original radio drama by Julio Martinez. On this episode of From The Vault we present an original radio drama "Che & Allen" inspired by the recordings of two iconic figures represented in the Pacifica Radio Archive Collection Che Guevara and Allen Ginsberg. Che Guevara Allen Ginsberg debate in 1965 at Hanratty's Bar and Hotel Lymric Ireland. From Pacifica Radio.
This play takes place at Hanratty's Bar and Hotel in Lymric Ireland where Che happened to be for St Patrick's Day in 1965 (true story) and when Allen Ginsberg was in Paris (also True Story). Julio Martinez decided to take artistic license and place them both in Hanratty's Bar that St. Patrick's Day to discuss the important issues that each of these iconic figures held dear: Politics, Revolution, Sexual Preference, Art and Poetry. Julio Martinez does a masterful job capturing the intelligence, wit and oratory skills that each man possesses when sparring in debate in search of common ground.
Many local listener's of Pacifica Radio KPFK in Los Angeles may be familiar with the work of Julio Martinez as host of Arts in Review or the special Holiday radio dramas he produces each December for the last several years.
Going even further back Julio Martinez played guitar with singer Al Jarreau in the KPFK studios in 1968 and before THAT was a collaborator in a children's radio drama program at Pacifica's Flagship station KPFA in Berkeley California.
Julio Martinez was inspired by Pacifica's 1964 Che Guevara by WBAI producer Chris Koch recorded at the Cuban Mission complex in New York City. Che created an impromptu press conference following his address at that year's United Nation's general assembly.
Julio was more familiar with Pacifica's vast Allen Ginsberg recordings.
We included an example of Allen Ginsberg's keen with a astute skills in the art of informal debate from a 1966 recording as Ginsberg takes on Dr. Donald Luria of the New York County Subcommittee on Narcotics as to the value of psychedelics in our lives.
