Wave Farm Radio: WGXC 90.7-FM is pleased to be a broadcast partner for Radio Art Zone, a joint project by the artist duo Mobile Radio (Sarah Washington and Knut Aufermann) and the Luxembourg community station Radio ARA, broadcasting for 100 days from 18th June to 25th September 2022 as part of the European Capital of Culture Esch2022. The schedule consists of two daily programs: a 22-hour radio art production, and a two-hour lunchtime live radio show from a local kitchen. It also features two month-long artist residencies and a program of public events. Each day the radio sounds different from the next: 100 international and local artists and groups have been invited to produce a durational program, requiring them to fully immerse themselves in topics and production techniques of their choice. Taking form through performances, compositions, installations and interventions in public space, from the point of view of the listeners Radio Art Zone is a kind of audible lucky dip. Every day a distinctive concept is offered, a new experience of sound, a novel idea of radio. The lunchtime shows bring a domestic scenario to the radio: people cook and talk, relax with guests and laugh. This framework makes space for spontaneous discussions about the radio art works between artists, invited guests and passers-by, all involved in cooking together on air, without agenda or formal interviews. Some live lunches will be hosted in Radio Art Zone's publicly accessible studio, others broadcast from private and workplace kitchens in and around Esch, anchoring the project in the everyday life of the audience. For 100 days Radio Art Zone will be broadcast within the Esch2022 Capital of Culture area on FM radio. It will also be available online and via simultaneous broadcast on a host of international partner stations which enable the program to be widely accessed across the globe. Wave Farm is delighted to announce that José Alejandro Rivera will serve as a 2022 Wave Farm Radio Art Fellow. During his engagement, Rivera will make additions to the Wave Farm Broadcast Radio Art Archive, an online resource and broadcast series on Wave Farm’s WGXC 90.7-FM, which is syndicated to stations across the country through The Radio Art Hour. Rivera will also conduct workshops and listening sessions with WGXC programmers and interested members of the public, and create original radio artworks for broadcast.

José Alejandro Rivera (he/they) is a Puerto Rican, Ohio-born artist, composer, designer, and researcher currently based in SW Vermont. Their layered, place-based practice is informed by a background in music, architecture, and tending land. Working through sound and space to draw on critical cartography, technological ubiquity, systems, and flows of temporalities, José creates evocative, experimental soundworks, geo-notational maps, sound design for podcasts and the moving image, and multichannel, audiovisual installations and performances. He regards natural and built environments as woven fabrics of experience and association that exist and change across phenomenological, political, cultural, and aesthetic dimensions. In performances, they often use the space as an instrument, incorporating live and processed location recordings, various microphones and DIY electronics, radios, custom software, samples, and spatialized, textural elements that oscillate between noise and music. José’s encounters with the electromagnetic spectrum pursue expanded states of consciousness, sonic agency, sites of contingency and multiplicity, science fiction, and notions of identity as it relates to neurodivergence, diaspora, and queerness. His interests also include listening beyond sound, learning from the wisdom of plants and medicine making, regenerative farming, dreamwork, meditation, and movement practices like Qigong and yoga. https://proxemiasound.net/

As an extension of his aural cartographic practice, he performs and makes electroacoustic pieces as Proxemia. He has been featured on disquiet.com, framework radio, Rare Frequency, and textsound.org, among others. His multi-year exploration of the origins of weather mapping, radar, and the Green Building at MIT (2016-19), resulted in performances, a handmade cd/object, and a ground-level, 8.1 channel radio installation that mixed live transmission of spatial resonances with sonified weather data, custom software, and location recordings from the roof’s weather station. Other projects and collaborations have been exhibited at the Blackstar Film Festival, Martha Hill Dance Theater at Bennington College, National Arts Centre (NAC), MASS MoCA, Venice Biennale of Architecture, Bienal de Imagen en Movimiento (BIM), the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Together Boston, Goethe-Institut Boston, ICA Boston (Leap Before You Look: Black Mountain College 1933–1957), The Sensory Ethnography Lab, MIT’s MediaLab and List Visual Art Center, The Center for Visual and Performing Arts at UMass Dartmouth, and Le Laboratoire in Cambridge, MA. From 2015-2020, he worked closely with Non-Event, a Boston-based experimental music series, as a live-sound engineer and graphic designer. Along with numerous collaborations, José’s fluid body of work also includes workshops, teaching, and the design and construction of an open­-air performance space for a youth dance and drumming group in rural Ghana. They studied art and sound in MIT’s Program in Art, Culture, and Technology (MSc 2017), and hold a BS in Architecture & Environmental Design from Kent State University (2011).

Virtues Vol. 2 is the second volume in a three-part series of EPs sonically interpreting a group of esoteric line drawings produced by the Samaritan Foundation—a new age spiritual cult Rami’s family was involved with in the early 1990s. Primarily working with found and manipulated audio sources, Rami & J. will use their time at Wave Farm to explore the possibilities of incorporating broadcast—a technology the Samaritan Foundation was deeply distrustful of—into this project. Among other strategies, they plan to collect field recordings from around the farm, re-recording them via broadcast at different frequencies and distances. They will also work towards a two-hour radio broadcast that incorporates elements of Virtues Vol. 1, as well as remixes from a forthcoming project (Virtues Vol. 1—Remixed & Reinterpreted), primary source recordings from the community, work in progress, and audio from video essays created exploring this group and the lasting impact on Rami’s family. This will mark the duo’s first time collaborating in person, previously only working remotely.

Rami George is an interdisciplinary artist currently based on Lenape land in what is now called Philadelphia. They have exhibited and screened broadly and remain motivated by political struggles and fractured narratives. ramigeorge.com

J. Midden is a musician and sound artist. His work explores questions about identity, uncertainty, and forgiveness. It has been described by The Quietus as “all-consuming” as well as “a banquet of the bizarre and beautiful” by the UK Press Association. He is currently based on unceded lands of the Clakamas, Cowlitz, and Confederated Tribes of the Grande Ronde in what is now called Portland, Oregon. jmidden.com

INSECTA is an ephemeral radio installation and vocal performance in collaboration with the insects that inhabit Wave Farm. Luminescent balloon membranes become microphones to explore experimental passages between sounding beings (insects, air, voices) as a way to traverse a relationship with otherness, non-normative knowledge, and sustainable sociality. Curci and Genoud aim to contribute with the practice of collective voices (including other species in that collectiveness) capable of telling new stories, imagining and producing shared and livable futures.

Florencia Curci works as a sound and radio artist, performer and curator. Since 2017 she is Director of CASo (Sound Art Center), an institution dependent on the Ministry of Culture of Argentina promoting artistic research on sound, experimental music and social acoustics. Co-curator of RUIDO Festival. Her installations, radio pieces and performances explore collective sounding and listening strategies and were commissioned by KunstRadio, AMEE, CA2M (Madrid), Centro Cultural Kirchner (Arg) and presented internationally at Festival Aural (MX), MediaLab Prado (Madrid), Tsonami Festival (Chile), among others. florenciacurci.com

Agustin Genoud works as a performer, musician and scholar in the fields of contemporary voice, post-humanism and new media. He creates expanded voice techniques that disrupt and interfere with the humanly assigned sounds to the vocal tract and tries to expand those capacities through machinic and animalistic behaviors. As a scholar and lecturer Genoud’s work centers around post-humanism, new materialisms, expanded voice performances and biopolitics. Join Wave Farm Radio Art Fellow José Alejandro Rivera for this three-part, free workshop series taking place on Monday evenings in November. (Mondays, November 14, 21, and 28, 2022; 5 - 7 p.m. on Zoom*) Email info@wavefarm.org to register. This series of process-based production workshops explore the ways radio can inhabit, be affected by, or create systems of delay, relay, feedback, and loops. How might particular experiences of multiple users across time and space affect dynamics between sender and receiver? How might qualities of simultaneity, “live-ness” and recorded audio be exploited or utilized? What is needed for access and participation in systems where exchanging live/recorded audio is a tool for artistic radio processes?

Participants will have opportunities to engage with precedents that include, but are not limited to, specific works from the Wave Farm Radio Art Archive, create (and respond to) individual pieces that will contribute to a collective audio work, and consider potential possibilities between “one-way” vs. “two-way” processes, networked systems, net/web radio, broadcasting FM/AM, and other methods of sharing audio/transmission.

Each session will be informed by the experience, skills, interests, and engagement of the participants. The sessions will include brief presentation, precedents, group discussion, and interactive experiments, and time to create short (1-2 minute) recordings / audio works. Sessions will also include special guest artist Patrick McGinley (aka murmer) the producer and host of Framework, a weekly radio program dedicated to field recording and its use in composition that airs on over a dozen radio stations around the world.

Prompts will be the basis for the creation of recordings that allow participants to individually respond to one another’s work through sonic means. A series of staggered audio responses will serve as building blocks for the next prompt/response. A possible final result may be a co-created collection of directives, processes, and/or responses that will contribute to an in-person/hybrid listening session and/or broadcast.
