Sound artist and composer, Andrea Williams, utilizes site-specific elements and perceptual cues to reveal the unseen connections between people and their environment. Her compositions make use of field recordings, instruments, computer technologies and the sound of the performance space itself. She has led soundwalks in New York and the Bay Area, and has shown and performed both solo and with various musicians at galleries and alternative spaces internationally, such as the Whitney Museum, Headlands Center for the Arts, Children’s Creativity Museum, NPR, Miami Art Fair, and the Mamori sound artist residency in the Amazon rainforest. For this week’s podcast show, which coincidentally marks our 4th year in existence, we’re thrilled to be able to offer you this special KYE Records feature produced by Nick Hamilton of Vittelli Recordings out of London. As you may recall, Vittelli was responsible for those terrific Matthew P. Hopkins and London Sound Survey albums that we raved about on the show earlier in the year (*see episode #33). Long-time listeners of the show will likely be quite familiar with the work of Graham Lambkin and his KYE label. Graham has been a guest on the podcast show twice and he so generously contributed the artwork to our FFFour KMSU benefit release that we put out last year at this time. We also regularly feature any and all KYE and Graham Lambkin-related releases on the podcast show, as they are a continuous source of discovery and fascination. Simply put, KYE has had a huge influence on the overall sound and direction that the podcast has taken over the past four years. For this special feature, Nick started off by providing Graham with a series of cues and questions to which Graham recorded his responses at home over both sides of a C90 cassette. The recording captures some of the incidental and accidental sounds of Graham’s domestic surroundings – a common element heard throughout much of his solo and collaborative sound work. Next, Nick reached out to several KYE artists to get some insight into their work and to get an exclusive or unreleased track. Using Graham’s tape as his guide, he then weaved together their words and music into this 2-hour feature that charts a unique history of KYE Records to date. So in addition to Graham’s narration and insights throughout, you’ll also hear from these KYE artists in the following order: Moniek Darge, Tim Goss (Call Back the Giants), Vanessa Rossetto, Matthew Revert, Matthew Hopkins (Vincent Over the Sink, The Bowles), Mark Harwood (Astor), and Matt Krefting. Malaysia shows its support of ham radio emergency communications; an unidentified German ham takes on Russian military communications; Japan announces a deep space satellite mission; some new DMR experiments take place down-under and some space junk turns out to be a new Russian satellite.

Tune in for rape accusations against Bill Cosby, and the discussion around the media coverage, and lack therof, of the years-old charges. The show will tune in comedian Hannibal Buress, and his August set about Cosby that went viral and started this latest discussion. Then Cosby refuses to answer an Associated Press reporter in November, and then tries to get his non-answer removed from the record. And then he does not answer NPR's Scott Simon last weekend. PARALEKTRONOIA begins with a performative lecture by pioneering German electronic artist Felix Kubin. Musician and “compositional linguist” Chris Mann opens. A reception will follow.

The electro-paranoiac phenomenon has left its mark on the lives of numerous electronic pioneers. Russian-born Léon Theremin not only invented the theremin, but also invented an infamous bugging device for the KGB. And Joe Meek, an eccentric British music producer, locked himself, at times armed, in his studio in order to keep the origin of his sound effects secret. A “paralectronic” artist has a mental radio with hypersensitive antennas. - Felix Kubin

In order to track down instances of "paralektronoia", Kubin interviewed inventors and musicians who research the effects of invisible oscillations on the psyche using field recordings and radiophonic experiments. The work includes interviews with artist Carl Michael von Hausswolff on Electronic Voice Phenomena and with scientist Stefan Andriopoulos on media and occultism, as well as excerpts of conversations with Alvin Lucier, Lionel Marchetti, Asmus Tietchens, Mika Vainio, and Dr. Hannes Maier, a physicist and neuro-otologist, among others.

Visitors to the symposium and members of the New School community are invited to open up their ears to the sounds of Greenwich Village with a brief sound walk.

A soundwalk is any excursion whose main purpose is listening to the environment. It is exposing our ears to every sound around us no matter where we are. A soundwalk can be done alone or with a friend (in the latter case the listening experience is more intense and can be a lot of fun when one person wears a blindfold and is led by the other). It can also be done in small groups, in which case it is always interesting to explore the interplay between group listening and individual listening by alternating between walking at a distance from or right in the middle of the group. A soundwalk can furthermore cover a wide area or it can just centre around one particular place. No matter what form a soundwalk takes, its focus is to rediscover and reactivate our sense of hearing. -- Hildegard Westerkamp

((audience)) presents a screening of stereo radio plays by seminal radio artists Gregory Whitehead, Felix Kubin, and Anna Friz. This screening will include Gregory Whitehead’s Potato God Scarecrow, a humorous, free associating radio rumination; Kubin’s Raum für Telemagnetische Medien, a piece on ghosts and electricity (using source material from Paralektronoia); and Anna Friz’s The Clandestine Transmissions of Pirate Jenny, the tale of a radio pirate transmitting from inside the black box of radio technology. The "Saturday Afternoon Show" welcomes Nicolas Collins, celebrated artist and Professor, Department of Sound at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, who will speak with host Tom Roe about his newly released "Pea Soup To Go," an open access version of Collin's venerable feedback composition, "Pea Soup." "Pea Soup To Go" is a free streaming audio web application that generates an ever-changing domestic sound art installation on any computer.

Premiered in 1974, "Pea Soup" creates a self-stabilizing feedback network of microphones and speakers that tunes itself to the architectural acoustics of the space and responds to events—instrumental performances, ambient sounds, human movement, even air currents—with swooping flights of sound. "Pea Soup To Go" mines decades of performances, including contributions by numerous guest musicians, from around the globe to produce a similarly dreamy soundscape that slowly shifts from key to key as the app shuffles and cross-fades from one recorded space to another.

Black Lake installation and performance in the gallery's garden. Black Lake is a multi-media duo comprised of Susan Jennings and Slink Moss. Combining projected video, hand-made sculpture/instruments, paintings, shadows, spoken word, electric guitars, original lyrics, and percussion, Black Lake usually makes art installations in galleries and museums. Throughout the course of each exhibit, the duo enters into the installations one or more times to make sound art and perform their original music. For this one-evening musical and sound art performance, Black Lake will install their sculpture/instruments and project video art onto the snowy garden behind the gallery. The event will be live-streamed on the BlackLakeArt Ustream Channel http://www.ustream.tv/channel/black-lake-art and takes place during Hudson's Annual Winter Walk. He has composed orchestral music for the Cleveland Chamber Symphony and the String Orchestra of Brooklyn and has performed and exhibited at the Kitchen, ISSUE Project Room, Roulette, Eyebeam, MoMa/PS1, International Computer Music Festival, Experimental Intermedia, Performa, Exit Art, Sculpture Center, Transmediale Berlin, SCOPE Art Foundation, Audio Art Festival Krakow and many other venues in New York and worldwide. Zach is also founder of the experimental music series, "Darmstadt: Classics of the Avant Garde" (co-curated with Nick Hallett), former co-curator of the PS1/MoMa WarmUp music series and former curator of Issue Project Room.
