free103point9 Radio Labs provide students with technical skills and contextual background to consider and utilize the transmission spectrum for creative expression. Workshops address four main topics: the history of broadcasting; how transmitters work; online transmission tools; and transmission arts as a creative medium. On September 27th, join Tianna Kennedy (free103point9); and Maka Kotto (Prometheus Radio Project), and Kaya Weisman (Germantown Community Farm) for a transmitter building workshop, discussion, and screening of "Un Poquito de Tanta Verdad" (Corrugated Films.) A 90-minute documentary, "A Little Bit of So Much Truth" captures the unprecedented media phenomenon that emerged when tens of thousands of school teachers, housewives, indigenous communities, health workers, farmers, and students took 14 radio stations and one TV station into their own hands, using them to organize, mobilize, and ultimately defend their grassroots struggle for social, cultural, and economic justice.

The Van Vorst Park Soundwalk is an interactive sound art piece by Damian Catera which simultaneously uses the park as a musical score and instrument. The public is invited to experience the piece through portable headset radios as they walk through a loosely defined route within the park. The piece operates with three limited-range low power FM transmitters which are situated along the route. Each transmitter plays a component of the sound composition which is broadcast on a single frequency. As listeners move through the park, with their radios tuned to the project frequency, the piece shifts and transitions between the separate components. In this enhanced environment, the listener becomes an active and crucial participant in the realization of the piece.

Commencing in January, free103point9 will be in residence at the Ontological Theater at St. Mark’s Church. This partnership is being formalized to foster a mutually complimentary and inspiring collaboration, which began in 2006 with participation in the Ontological’s second Noise! festival, a program of their acclaimed Incubator series. With free103point9 transitioning from eleven years of city programming out of a small studio space in South Williamsburg, Brooklyn; this partnership is an exiting leap into a venue superbly equipped for performance and exhibition.

Radio Labs: Seasonal workshops provide participants with the technical skills and historical/theoretical grounding pertinent to transmission media in hopes of fostering creative expression within and with the transmission spectrum.

free103point9 is pleased to announce the 2009 Distribution Grant for New York State Artists providing support for the distribution of new works in film, video, sound, new-media, and media-installation. This grant is for completed works only.

On November 13th, Galen Joseph-Hunter (Executive Director, free103point9) will introduce this regrant opportunity as well as the application process. A conversation about the distribution and exhibition of media art will follow. Panelists include: Rebecca Cleman (Director of Distribution, Electronic Arts Intermix); Amanda McDonald Crowley (Executive Director, Eyebeam); John Mhiripiri (Director of Administration & Exhibitions, Anthology Film Archives); Michael J. Schumacher (Diapason Gallery & DRAW); and Milton Tabbot (Senior Director, Programming, IFP - Former Regrant Administrator). This event will be streamed online and archived at www.free103point9.org.

About the Distribution Grant

Funding is available from free103point9 through a regrant from New York State Council on the Arts’ Electronic Media and Film Program. Grant awards will assist artists in making works available to public audiences and may include, but are not limited to: duplication of previews, screening, and exhibition copies of moving image and sound works; promotional materials including documentation and schematics of media-installation and new-media works. The rental or purchase of equipment for exhibition/distribution by individual artists is also eligible. Artists may request funding support up to a maximum amount of $10,000.

New to the Distribution Grant this year, successful applicants will also be awarded the additional opportunity to work with a project consultant. This mentor will have expertise in the grantees’ specific genre of media art.
