Anna Friz is a sound and radio artist living in Montreal. For the past six years Friz has created self-reflexive radio works where radio is the source, subject, and medium of the work. She has presented installation and solo performance works incorporating low-watt FM transmission at the Western Front in Vancouver, Send + Receive Festival in Winnipeg (2000, 2004), Tone Deaf Festival in Kingston, Studio XX and the SociÈtÈ des arts technologiques in MontrÈal; as well as at free103point9 Gallery in Brooklyn, PS 122 in New York City, the Third Coast Audio Festival in Chicago, Ars Electronica 2002 in Linz, and at the Akademie der K¸nste, Berlin. She has produced numerous original radio works for Kunstradio, Austria, for campus/community radio stations across Canada and the U.S.; and for public radio in Canada, Austria, Denmark and Mexico. Together with Annabelle Chvostek, Friz toured The Automated Prayer Machine in winter 2004 across Europe and Canada. Current projects include the upcoming residency for the Deep Wireless festival of radio art in Toronto May 2005.

The Flames of Discontent
Led by Labor organizer/musician John Pietaro's voice and electrified 5-string banjo, in collaboration with Laurie Towers electric bass guitars, the Flames of Discontent play music that reinvigorates the protest song. New and daring arrangements of Guthrie, Seeger, Ochs, Leadbelly, Hill, Cunningham, Chaplin, T-Bone Slim, Brecht, Weill, Eisler and others, plus original music, spoken word pieces and free improvisations. The Flames' specialty is in reconstructing classic songs of protest, Labor and social change into works that reflect various strains of rock and the more standard folk sounds with touches of rockabilly, punk, world and roots musics to rekindle radicalism at a time when its needed most.

Scanner - British artist Robin Rimbaud traverses the experimental terrain between sound, space, image and form, creating absorbing, multi-layered sound pieces that twist technology in unconventional ways. From his early controversial work using found mobile phone conversations, through to his focus on trawling the hidden noise of the modern metropolis as the symbol of the place where hidden meanings and missed contacts emerge, his restless explorations of the experimental terrain have won him international admiration from amongst others, Bjork, Aphex Twin and Stockhausen.

Damian Catera is an electroacoustic composer/guitarist, sound installation creator and media artist. Catera's work reflects interests in sound based composition/ improvisation, transmission and sociopolitical critique. He has toured the US and Europe twice and has also presented work in Latin America and Asia. Recently he's been performing improvised "deCompositions" for live electronics, radio and guitar and also participated in the New Sound New York sound art exhibit during the spring of 2004. In recent years, Catera has performed improvised solo guitar/ radio/ computer based pieces abroad and in the US in New York area venues like the Knitting Factory, the Kitchen and The Cooler. He has also done live radio broadcasts on Free 103 and WFMU. Damian toured Europe in December of 2001, and May of 2002 performing in the Czech Republic, Germany , Poland and Slovakia. In March of 2000 he performed in the "La Primavera en Habana" festival in Cuba . During the spring of 1999, Damian toured the United States with Japanese sound artist and Zeni Geva guitarist K.K. Null. Damian also composed two interactive pieces for the NYU New Music Ensemble during 2002 and 2003. Catera's "deCompositional" process, consists of an expanded instrument system which samples and probabilistically processes live sound with algorithms, which he wrote in the MAX/ MSP programming environment. The end product is a constantly evolving, machine improvised soundscape that is distinct in each implementation.

Matt Mikas is a sound artist with a history of involvement with microradio. A sonic anthropologist, Mikas uses turntables alternately as a historian and performer. In January 2000 he curated the sound program for Dave Hickey’s Ultralounge at the University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum in Tampa. "Of The Bridge," a collaboration with Matt Bua and Tom Roe, premiered in Brooklyn! (2001) at the Palm Beach Institute of Contemporary Art, sampling the Williamsburg Bridge and Sonny Rollins (who often rehearsed there). Mikas’s current project "Interactive Audio Response Kit" is a musical composition and listening tool created for two identical LPs.

free103point9's Tom Roe is a sound transmission artist sometimes known as DJ Dizzy. He co-founded microradio stations 87X in Tampa, FL and free103point9 in Brooklyn, NY. Roe performs with transmitters using multiple bands (FM, CB, walkie-talkie), as well as prepared CDs, vinyl records, and various electronics. He has also written about music for The Wire, Signal to Noise, and The New York Post, among others. Roe's writing about Free Jazz in New York recently appeared in The Wire's 20th Anniversary publication Undercurrents (Continuum). His collaboration with Matt Bua and Matt Mikas, Of The Bridge, premiered in Brooklyn! (2001) at the Palm Beach Institute of Contemporary Art. Roe’s Constructive Engagement, featuring manipulated recordings from recent political protests and Of The Bridge, both received funding from The New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency. He co-curated Tune(In))) (2002), a one-night installation featuring over sixty sound artists performing live into six radio transmitters. He has also performed at the Gwangju Biennele in 2004, and at Center for Contemporary Art in Warsaw, Poland, and at Laznia Centre for Contemporary Art in Gdansk, Poland. Roe has also spoken on panels for Fairness and Accuracy in Media, the Grassroots Radio Conference, Anarchist Forum, and NYC Grassroots Media Conference. He is also free103point9 Program Director. He has DJ'd Rubulad, Union Pool, Galapagos, Smack Mellon, and other New York clubs, and hosted "Audio Buffet" from 2000-2002 at Diner in Williamsburg and "Rock 'n' Roll Radio" in 2002 at Angel in Manhattan.

Bryan Zimmerman is a member of The Dust Dive. The Dust Dive’s unconventional sound borrows from ill American landscapes, edge-city teenage hangouts, and overgrown, overlooked places. Conceived in a noisy railroad apartment in Brooklyn, the trio’s songs possess the quirky sincerity of a youth recital while burrowing into decidedly mesmerizing, urban pastoral, and ghostly terrain. Employing violin, chord organ, piano, electric guitar, sampled field recordings, Hamradio transmissions, musical saw, and two- and three-part vocals that are often counter-melodic and uniquely filtered, their sparse yet lush and textural sound-visions have been compared to Syd Barrett, The Flaming Lips, Smog, Palace, Dirty Three, and The Velvet Underground. Always taking a multidisciplinary approach, their live performances feature film and video projections that serve as a serene yet provocative visual accompaniment to the music. Their critically-acclaimed debut full-length, Asleep or Awake Walk, was released by free103point9 in September 2004, and will be released in Europe later this year by Own Records.

free103point9 Transmission Artists activate the FM airwaves at Scope New York featuring live performances and transmission works broadcasting daily from the free103point9 radio booth overlooking the Scope grassy hilltop.

Intent on challenging passive viewing, Scope ushers in 2006 with 30,000 square feet of organic exhibition space, specifically designed to open up the grid typical to all art fairs of the past. 80 galleries will uphold Scope’s unique tradition of one-person and thematic group shows, while spontaneous auto-curations and mobile exhibitions are “synched and linked” to the power of broadcast. The free103point9 project space at Scope will feature a live performance booth, the free103point9 Dispatch Series, as well as other Transmission Artist multiples. A wall of assembled images will represent the 18 members of free103point9's Transmission Artists participating in the ScopeOnAir.

A group of media reform activists with the Philadelphia-based Prometheus Radio Project visit the Capital Region to spread the word about how communities can shape their own information technology futures. There will be a 6 p.m. potluck during which they will conduct a teach-in on how to build "cantennas" for picking up wireless Internet signals, followed at 7 p.m. with a screening and talk about grassroots perspectives on media reform. A group of media reform activists with the Philadelphia-based Prometheus Radio Project will visit the Capital Region on Thursday, March 23, 2006 to spread the word about how communities can shape their own information technology futures. They will be speaking about grassroots perspectives on media reform at 7 PM at The Sanctuary For Independent Media, 3361 6th Avenue in Troy, following a 6 PM potluck during which they will conduct a teach-in on how to build "cantennas" for picking up wireless Internet signals.
According to Prometheus organizer Dharma Dailey, "Communities can build, own, and control their communications infrastructure and that's what we'll be talking about in Troy."
The Prometheus Radio Project has first-hand knowledge of plans to build out wireless Internet access in Philadelphia, which is frequently cited as a model for other cities. They have proposed numerous strategies for making the service more affordable, more responsive and more accountable to community needs.
The Prometheus Radio Project was formed during the late '90s struggle to create a legal, low-power FM radio service in the United States. Some members of the group are former "pirate" broadcasters credited with having used civil disobedience tactics to successfully challenge Federal Communications Commission policies on community radio, leading to the establishment of hundreds of non-commercial stations around the country since new rules were implemented in 2000. They are best known for having turned back the FCC's attempt to relax broadcast ownership rules two years ago.
In a case decided in June 2004 ("Prometheus Radio Project v. Federal Communications Commission") the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in Philadelphia dealt a major setback to the nation’s largest media companies, criticizing the formula devised by the FCC to measure the diversity of media markets and justify relaxation of rules that would permit a company to own more outlets in a particular city.
According to the New York Times, "The court decision was a victory for smaller broadcasters and a coalition of labor, consumer, religious, artistic and civil rights organizations, which have said that the relaxation of the media ownership rules threatened to reduce the diversity of voices on the airwaves and would lead to declining standards in television and radio programming."
The Prometheus Radio Project organizers are on tour to gather information for the Second National Summit for Community Wireless Networks at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri, which takes place on the weekend of March 31-April 2, 2006. According to Prometheus activist Hannah Sassaman, "We see community wireless networks as the logical extension of our work with low power FM. It's all about radio--think of it as 'smart radio.'"
The first wave of smart radio was released to the public in 1999 in the form of WI-FI (two-way smart radios that allow computers to communicate with each other and the Internet). Originally envisioned by its creators as a way to network offices without wires, it quickly became a way for neighbors all over the world to share Internet service.
According to the Prometheus Radio Project's Dharma Dailey, "WiFi is one of dozens of wireless radio devices including portable phones, garage door openers, remote controls and Mr. Microphones that transmit and receive on special radio bands that have been designated 'unlicensed.' Unlicensed does not mean--as some big telecoms are saying right now--that there are no rules and chaos reigns. Quite the contrary. On licensed radio, people get permission to broadcast from the FCC. With unlicensed radio, equipment manufacturers get permission from the FCC to build a new device that takes advantage of unlicensed spectrum. Once the device meets the FCC's engineering standards, any number can be made without each one having to be licensed. For example, people who want to use unlicensed devices--their portable phones, garage door openers or whatever--do not need to get prior permission from the FCC."
Most unlicensed devices are low-power. This means that smart radio devices "whisper" instead of "shouting" the way big broadcasters do. Whispering has major advantages. Many more conversations can take place where everyone is whispering instead of shouting, and low-power networks have proved to be very effective in a variety of situations. So-called "mesh" networks with many low-power transmitters constantly whispering to their neighbors--sending and receiving--are far more reliable than old-fashioned point-to-point networks. An important advantage to the community-minded spectrum pioneer is that each transmitter in a mesh network is relatively inexpensive to buy and install compared to big transmitters that need special towers to work. The network can grow piece by piece, cheap transmitter/receiver by cheap transmitter/receiver and can be built in a "pay as you go" fashion. As money becomes available the network grows, and each node can be owned by the person who throws it up on the roof. And the more people do so, the better the coverage and the better the network can run.

Stars Like Fleas
Having quietly created 2 highly-murmured about and mostly hand-traded cult releases over the past several years, Stars Like Fleas emerged from their cubby holes in 2005, immediately creating a stir and an overnight name for themselves in a sentiment-suspicious Brooklyn, selling out exponentially larger shows with the likes of Deerhoof, Grizzly Bear, Blevin Blectum, Hrvatski, Black Lights (Kyp Malone of TV On The Radio), Greg Davis, Bird Show, Mark Morgan (Sightings) and Akron/Family. People have written many words about them from within the New York press machine: chunka chunka. In contrast to similarly free-minded groups currently fusing folk, noise, electronics , and as in the works of Marcel Dzama (who created the cover art for their last record) Stars Like Fleas stands out for the delicate way they commingle the disturbing, harsh and confrontational with something undeniably direct, sincere, silly, joyous and unashamedly romantic.

Latitude/Longitude (Michael Garofalo and Patrick McCarthy) weave melodies, lush textures, and loops into electro-acoustic dream songs. Conjuring unfamiliar sounds from familiar sources such as guitars, radios, synthesizers, clarinets, and toy instruments, the duo chart the diverse sonic terrain of their own insular world.

free103point9 and Rhizome are pleased to present Surge Live at Participant, Inc. A reception to celebrate Surge an online exhibition exploring the aesthetics of wireless transmission. With presentations by several of the featured artists: 31 Down, Angel Nevarez, and NYSAE (New York Society for Acoustic Ecology). At this one-night event and reception, all of the Surge projects will be on view. Angel Nevarez, 31 Down, and NYSAE (New York Society for Acoustic Ecology) will give brief presentations on their pieces. Join us for a reception at 6:30 p.m. and presentations at 7 p.m.

Angel Nevarez will present documentation of The Lowdrone. Made in collaboration with artist Alex Rivera, The Lowdrone melds the lowrider, a customized vehicle with hydraulics and candy coated paint, with the functionality of the drone, an unmanned aerial vehicle equipped with surveillance cameras that has been standard U.S. military fare since the ‘60s. Initially commissioned for INSITE 2005/Tijuana Calling, The LowDrone is the world’s first flying lowrider, outfitted with wireless video transmission capabilities and conditioned for remote aerial flight. Through The LowDrone website, users are able to simulate flight over one of the most surveilled spaces on the planet: the U.S./Mexico border between Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico and San Diego, California.

Artists of the NYSoundmap project Andrea Williams, Edmund Mooney, Andrea Polli and Sha sha Feng will discuss their common fascination with sound and its relationship to natural and cultural environments. The NYSoundmap is an ongoing project by the New York Society for Acoustic Ecology (NYSAE), an organization dedicated to exploring the role of sound in natural and urban settings. The NYSoundmap focuses on the New York City sound environment and includes multiple recordings such as the webradio program Giant Ear))), a series of experiences called City in a Soundwalk by Michelle Nagai, an interface to access historical sound works called Protest Transport Celebrate by Andrea Callard and Sound-Seeker, a googlemap interface that allows visitors access to sounds recorded in the five boroughs of NYC. Later HSDOM (aka Jochen Hartmann) will create a live mix of the NYSoundmap sounds.

31 Down’s Mike Sharpie and Dr. Natasha Medvedenko will present their work the Somnambulator, a project that sets out to alleviate current manifestations of the Stendahl Syndrome, a psychosomatic illness caused by overexposure to beautiful art named after the French writer Marie Henri Boyle (1783-1842). Here, the artists ironically assert, this syndrome may be incurred by the visual content of the web; and offer the Somnambulator as an antidote. At this presentation, you will learn more about how living a Somnambulated life can increase your energy, vitality and desire for virtual freedom.

Abe Linkoln and Marisa Olson: Universal Acid employs the format of a video blog to document the transmission, manipulation and re-broadcast of music videos. lower lights collective is a group of artists who work in performance, sound, and sculpture. Previous works have been presented by Movement Research at the Judson Church, and The Chocolate Factory. Our collaboration maintains each artist's distinct vision, while not allowing any particular voice to be greater than another. We basically ignore each other, but still sort of get influenced by what we see out of the corner of the eye, or hear out of the corner of the ear.

Static Decoy is part of an ongoing collaborative project for percussion and movement created and performed by Estelle Woodward, Alison Robinson and Jeff Arnal. Founded in 2002, this trio shares a dynamic and vocabulary that has been cultivated over time, and is rooted in the performance of improvisation. Point of Departure examines the idea of limits and how they are always expanding as we grow. This structure invites participants to introduce multiple events within a single composition. The piece evolves as the group navigates the impact that each event has on the space, and the modalities through which actions dissolve into one another. The performers work to unearth the residue of previous events as they de/re-construct the layers of the composition.

Since 1997 The BodyCartography Project, directed by Olive Bieringa and Otto Ramstad, has been investigating the resonance of space. They work with the bodies' relationship to the physical, architectural, climatic, technological and social landscapes that we inhabit in urban/wilderness and private/public contexts. Their ventures include dance performances, film/video projects and educational workshops. They have created works for over one hundred and thirty performance events in the USA, Canada, Brazil, New Zealand, Japan, Europe and Russia.

Constellation: Higher Octave

This duet is a phase of the performance piece Constellation begun by dance artist K.J. Holmes in 1999. Constellation is about the changing alignments of bodies, sound, light and story improvised by dance and trumpet in various combinations. Higher Octave explores the harmonic structures between dance, trumpet and voice to play with vibration, resonation and the unfolding of spirit in response to life's experiences.

This improvisation is an adaptation of one section of Troika Ranch's recently premiered work 16 [R]evolutions. It uses camera tracking technology to allow the performer to interactively generate the imagery, as well as to manipulate the sound score. The notion of this short section is to begin the improvisation with a single gesture, and to let this gesture (along with the resulting imagery and sound) evolve to a state of complexity over the course of the performance.

Herd is a single channel video/sound installation that focuses on the extraordinary quotidian energy of New York City. The frenetic movement of the street is slowed to a pace where the viewer can form an intimate relationship to the histrionics of everyday events. Herd contains a sound score by Albert Mathias and was originally created as décor for Merce Cunningham's Events in 2004.

Penny Campbell (dancer) and Arthur Brooks (trumpet and flugelhorn) met in 1973 at Bennington College. Arthur, who had studied with Cecil Taylor at Antioch and later performed with him in New York and Europe, had arrived to continue his studies with Bill Dixon. Penny, a 1970 graduate of Bennington, had returned to work with Bill and Judith Dunn. Arthur went on to teach at Bennington for another 20-plus years in the Black Music Division, while Penny joined the dance faculty at Middlebury College, farther north in Vermont. In 1983, the two began a collaborative ensemble with dancer Susan Sgorbati and musician Rick O'Neal, performing improvised, evening-length works in various settings around the state and the northeast. Joined by dancers Peter Schmitz and Terry Creach and musicians Michael Chorney, Jeremy Harlos and Justin Perdue, they also performed as The Giants of Sciants for many years. Arthur has maintained his Ensemble V throughout the years as well and founded the Academy of Improvisational Music Studies in Vermont in 2003. In the last ten years, Penny and Arthur have both taught and performed at Work in the Performance of Improvisation, a summer intensive at Bennington College, and in venues around the world. Their work is composed improvisationally and improvised compositionally.

The Things Themselves

"The Things Themselves" is an introspective retrospective of the moment before, exploring the physicality inherent in a mysterious change.
Lisa Gonzales is a dance maker and performing artist who also dabbles in the wonderful art of puppetry. She was based in New York from 1999-2004, and currently lives in Chicago, where she is on faculty at Columbia College Chicago. She shows her work across the United States and will be traveling to Taipei, Taiwan and Yaroslavo, Russia this summer. She is also on faculty at the "Movement Intensive in Compositional Improvisation" which will kick off its first summer in June at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, PA. Lisa is a founding member of "The Architects," a dance company committed to the performance of improvisation.

“The Rat Land” chronicles the disintegration of a troubled and eccentric family. The plot centers on their adolescent daughter, Karen, coming of age as best she can amidst a post-Cold War American Grotesque. Caught between her nightmarish home life and a near-psychotic fantasy world of her own devising, she faces grown-up problems of violence, isolation, madness, and death. Prologue: a mysterious apparition. Scene 1: the family’s dinner hour is ruined. Alone, Karen reveals to us her secret fantasy world and its deities…
Composer, pianist and improviser Gordon Beeferman has written a variety of works for soloists, chamber groups and orchestra, and creates collaborative works with writers, dancers and visual artists. He has received awards and commissions from BMI, Concert Artists Guild, and the Fromm Foundation. Anti-Social Music is a NY-based composer/performer collective formed by musicians in their 20s and 30s dedicated to supporting the music of our generation and connecting the worlds of composed contemporary classical/jazz and the rock/punk/indie scenes that surround us.
Beth Greenberg is a stage director at New York City Opera.

The advent of radio in the US during the early part of the 20th century ushered in a new period of mass brainwashing never before seen in history. Suddenly, literacy was a non-factor in the dissemination of information and propaganda blended potently with entertainment. An entire population was mobilized for war with an enemy (Nazi Germany), which was an ally only a few years earlier, while the mass imprisonment of innocent Japanese-Americans was systematically legitimized with the help of this powerful new medium.
In the early 21st century, American radio is still a powerful mass brainwashing tool. The rise in right- wing talk radio mobilizes a new generation to accept the corporate fascist agenda of militarized world domination while the smattering of 'left' oriented programming creates an illusion of pluralism and democracy.
In this improvised performance, three live radios will be sampled and randomly manipulated with algorithms, which I wrote in the MAX/MSP programming environment. In the resulting real-time montage, the dialectical tools of order and chaos will be used to unearth the not so hidden subtext of an empire in decline--perhaps its last gasps for control. The voice of America's fear and paranoia turned back on itself through the decentralized medium of web radio.

Galen Joseph-Hunter and Tom Roe will present free103point9 activities and discuss Transmission Arts, followed by a performance from Tom Roe using multiple bands (FM, CB, walkie-talkie). The program will conclude with a screening of Making Waves, a film about microradio (four stars from Film Threat).
