Polluted site in Hudson may qualify for funding

John Mason is reporting in the Register Star the city of Hudson may have another chance at state funding to clean up the contaminated former site of Foster's Refrigeration on the city's north side. Mayor William H. Hallenbeck Jr. told the Hudson Industrial Development Agency Mon., Aug. 11, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has named the polluted parcel located at 119 N. Second St. a state brownfield site, and it may qualify for remediation aid. A brownfield site is land previously used for industrial purposes, which may be contaminated by low concentrations of hazardous waste or pollution, and has the potential to be reused once it is cleaned up. The cleanup of the Foster's site was ready to be done in 2007, with funds available, but was halted by the effects of the recession on the state economy. The site contains approximately 2,600 cubic yards of lead-contaminated subsurface soil and 100 cubic yards of PCB-contaminated soil. Commercial refrigerators were manufactured there from 1946 to 1994. Read the full story in the Register Star.
