Daniel Zuckerman reports for Columbia-Greene Media that access to the Woodstock Dam in Cairo has been shut off. The town of Cairo asked the State Department of Transportation to install a temporary 20-foot concrete barrier at the department’s right-of-way off Route 32 to discourage the use of state property. As of July 18 Cairo police shut down access points surrounding the Woodstock Dam off Route 32, including from Halfmoon Drive and Frank Hitchcock Road. Cairo police Sgt. Richard Busch said, “First of all we do realize that at one time years ago this was a very popular place to swim. We also know that times have changed.... After receiving calls and information from many property owners and New York State DOT, we have discovered that at this time permission is not granted to anyone to access any properties leading to that old popular swimming area.” As with many cases of swimming holes getting closed, property owners complained about garbage and broken beer bottles left behind. “The bigger issue was people being slobs,” Cairo police officer Tom Plank said. “It’s really unfortunate kids don’t have a place to go swimming — every other place gets closed down.” Now anyone caught trespassing there will be ticketed.
