Local musician Greg Haymes dies

Steve Barnes reports in the Albany Times Union that Greg Haymes, a local musician, writer, and visual artist died April 10 from metastatic cancer. His notoriety in the area dates back to the 1980s when he was a member of Blotto, a legendary local band who had their song "I Wanna Be a Lifeguard" played as the 34th video ever shown on MTV's first day of programming. He wrote, often about music, for the Times Union from 1991 to 2016, and also wrote the local-entertainment blog, Nippertown for years. Haymes lived in Rensselaer County.
