Columbia Co. considers charging hiker

Billy Shannon writes in the Register Star the 28-year-old Massachusetts man found early Wed., Oct. 10, could face charges after he indicated to police he stayed in the woods intentionally. Kyle Pember was found in Taconic State Park, near Bash Bish Falls in Copake following a two-day search by authorities. After 36 hours in the woods, Pember called Columbia County 911, using his cell phone. Emergency personnel were able to determine the coordinates of his cell phone and he was eventually found within 15 feet of the location 911 provided. The District Attorney's office has been contacted concerning possible criminal charges. The county attorney's office is weighing possible legal action for reimbursement of fuel, equipment and overtime expenses incurred by the county as a result of the search.
