New York spends more per pupil than any other state
Annalise Knudson is reporting for Staten Island Live [dot] com the state of New York spends the most money on public education in the United States, according to a new report released May 18. The report, from the Empire Center, a fiscally conservative think tank and government-watchdog group, analyzed the latest U.S. Census annual data and New York’s spending on public elementary and secondary education and found that spending reached $25,139 per pupil in the 2018-2019 school year, more than all other states. New York public schools spent 91 percent more than the national average of $13,187 per student. Spending during the 2018-2019 school year was driven primarily by instruction, according to Empire Center. Census data showed that New York expended $17,225 per pupil in this category, 118 percent higher than the national average of $7,963. And New York spent more than $7,200 per pupil on the bureaucratic overhead of central district and school building administration, 54 percent more than the national average. According to the Annual Survey of School System Finances tables from the U.S. Census Bureau, per-pupil spending for elementary and secondary public education for all 50 states and the District of Columbia increased by five percent from 2018 to 2019.
