The day ahead on WGXC 90.7-FM
12:05 a.m.: Radio Stew: Cellphonia Wave Farm artist-in-residence Steve Bull explains his "Cellphonia" project, with listeners able to call in and leave a message to participate. To participate 518-512-0518 to call in and talk farming with Steve Bull's "Cellphonia" project. He's asking listeners to call in with sounds, stories, music and more, to create an ever-morphing song of the WGXC listening audience. Live from Wave Farm. "Cellphonia: Wave Farm," is both a physical installation and an ephemeral Internet performance. The project explores the intersection of site-specific environmental sounds with the intervention of computer code algorithm processing using public participation through a call-in phone number with live manipulation by the artists in the outdoor acoustic space. Listeners can participate by calling the "Cellphonia: Wave Farm" phone number: (518) 512-0518.
3 a.m. Live to Air "Live to Air" comprises an international compilation of artists' sound works. Forty-five artists, including Hank Bull, Marina Abramovic, Barbara Ess, Vito-Acconci, and others were invited to make a work for the context of Audio Arts with an approximate duration of five minutes. The medium of magnetic tape, and the processes and technologies associated with sound recording, now represent a significant and growing area of art practice that has, until now, been largely overlooked. This work has no form other than playback from tape, as opposed to the recording function being used 'passively' as a method of retaining an acoustic event, or acting as a strategy for other work. Furthermore, the processes of working with sound provide artists with similar manipulative, structural and ideological freedoms and possibilities to those normally associated with the traditional media such as painting, sculpture and collage. In many respects, this audial/technological 'space' is parallel to the physical space of a gallery, yet extends it through the potential of widespread dissemination inherent in the multiple production of cassettes and through broadcasting.
