Tanner, other local county clerks, stop short of defying license law

Jun 24, 2019 12:45 am
Paul Kirby reports in the Daily Freeman that Columbia County Clerk Holly Tanner won't say exactly what she will do when a new law takes effect allowing driver's licenses to be issued to undocumented immigrants. “While not in favor of how this bill was written due to myriad issues, I am waiting to see the outcome of potential lawsuits and determination from the NYS DMV leadership on how this law, if it stands, will be implemented in regards to points, documentation, verification, etc.,” Tanner, a Republican, said in an email to the newspaper. In Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin's office claims they are filing a lawsuit in federal court to prevent the new law. "It's not going to happen here in Rensselaer County. It just is not,” said McLaughlin, a Republican. "You didn't have to earn getting into this country. You don't get to break into our country and act as if you're a United States citizen, and that's what's happening with these insane lunatic progressives in the New York State legislature right now." Dutchess County Clerk Brad Kendell, also a Republican, would not say he will defy the law but said, “I expect that this will be challenged in court as infringing on Congress’ express power to “establish a uniform rule of Naturalization” and hope that it will be reversed. We continue to assess our options.” In Ulster County, county clerk Nina Postupack, also a Republican, previously said she will abide by the law.
