A Sienna College Research Institute poll released April 16 showed Senator Chuck Schumer with the highest approval rating of politicians elected statewide. Schumer had a 49 percent approval rating, compared to 41 percent for Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, and 47 percent for Gov. Andrew Cuomo. The poll also showed majority backing for making the two percent property tax cap permanent (64 percent), and eliminating cash bail for people facing misdemeanor or non-violent felony charges (55 percent), and banning single-use plastic bags at grocery stores (62 percent), new laws recently passed in Albany. Those polled slightly opposed 46 to 48 percent, the legislature's recent addition of sales tax on online purchases. Those polled weren't so happy about measures to ban the release of mugshots (only 31 percent support), and raises for state legislators and the governor (32 percent support).
