Eric Anderson in the Albany Times-Union reports that at least 109,000 people in the Capital Region may be affected by a data breach. Locals who have medical coverage with Anthem/Empire Blue Cross, the state's Empire Plan, or the NYSHIP Empire Blue Cross/Blue Shield HMO may have had personal information stolen from the parent compaby Anthem, which has 37.5 million members in Blue Cross Blue Shield plans nationwide. Anthem said Feb. 4 that its database with 80 million current and past members, and employees names, birthdays, Social Security numbers, street addresses, email addresses and employment information was breached. "Based on what we know now, there is no evidence that credit card or medical information, such as claims, test results or diagnostic codes were targeted or compromised," said Joseph R. Swedish, Anthem's president and CEO. The attack was discovered Jan. 29, according to the Times-Union story.
