Greenport moving forward with solar farm plan

Katie Kocijanski is reporting in the Register-Star Greenport Town Supervisor John Porreca and the town board have decided to move forward with plans to expand the town’s solar power usage. In the coming weeks a request for proposal will go out soliciting solar energy companies to build a small solar farm on town-owned property located on Middle Road. Porreca said the farm would help power town buildings such as the highway garage and the water and sewer department buildings. This will not be Greenport's first use of an alternative energy source for powering town properties. In 2013, the town installed a photovoltaic system atop town hall. That system has allowed Greenport to save money on energy costs, Porreca said. That savings has contributed to the town's ability to control the tax burden for residents.
