Spring snow storm leads to accidents on local roads

Apr 05, 2016 12:03 am

Roger Hannigan Gilson is reporting in the Register-Star snow sent cars sliding Mon., Apr. 4, as a spring snowstorm covered the region. State police reported approximately 28 accidents between midnight and nearly 2 p.m. throughout Columbia County. Portions of Route 9G, south of the Rip Van Winkle Bridge approach, that are plowed by the county were salted and plowed four times between 4:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., according to Tom Scheriff of the Columbia County Highway Department. The county's portions of Route 9, south of Bell's Pond, were salted and plowed three times. Snow on the road at these temperatures packs down when cars drive over it, making it slipperier than snow in colder temperatures, Scheriff added.
